Visualize the secretary of olden times. You will see the image of a secretary taking shorthand, typing and answering phone. But,
today the role of a cyber secretary or virtual assistant (VA) or online assistant or virtual professional or virtual business operator
(VBO) has expanded to unlimited extent.
Initially, secretarial services referred to providing only typing and dictation services. Slowly, additional services started getting
added to it. And the image of secretarial service industry changed. From what is seemed to be work-at-home moms providing
secretarial services as a means of generating additional income, today it has come a long way. Today's tech-savvy entrepreneurs
make use of modern and sophisticated office equipments to provide business support services to organizations from any part of
the globe. The services provided by these entrepreneurs are no more limited to typing or transcription but includes other services
like desktop publishing, spreadsheet design, business presentations, marketing, training, video conferencing, tele-interviews,
consultancy, etc. to name a few. They take advantage of the time difference in different parts of the world and economy to their
benefit to provide these services.
Lynette Smith, executive director of the Association of Business Support Services International (ABSSI) which was formerly known
as the National Association of Secretarial Services, had said with a chuckle "This is not your mother's secretarial service. Now we
have to educate people about what business support services are."
This shows the path the business support services are taking. The technological advances are sure to have a positive impact on
